Nebraska GIS-related Enterprise Shared
Services
In
2008 the Nebraska Information Technology Commission
(NITC) adopted GIS as one of its "shared services" initiatives and
outlined four action items as a part of its 2008 Statewide Technology Plan (http://www.nitc.state.ne.us/stp/stp.pdf).
Internet
Mapping Services. Develop a plan for
the coordinated delivery of Internet mapping services by state agencies, with
the objectives of making GIS services and existing GIS/geospatial data readily
available to a broader array of agencies, improving data access and services to
the public, minimizing unnecessary duplication of effort, providing data and
system backup, and where appropriate, provide for a coordinated security system,
including the possibility for limited data access and password protection.
Street
Centerline-Address Database
Develop a plan (including responsibilities and resource requirements) for
the coordinated development, data integration, on-going maintenance and online
distribution/Internet mapping service of a composite, “best available”,
statewide street centerline/address database.
Metadata
and state geospatial data catalogue Document
existing state agency GIS/geospatial data with formal metadata and encourage the
listing of available geospatial data in the Nebraska Geospatial Data Center
Clearinghouse Catalog.
Statewide Geospatial Infrastructure Strategic Planning. Develop an enterprise-level, statewide, GIS/geospatial infrastructure strategic plan for the geographic area of Nebraska. The planning process should involve the broader GIS user community (state, local, and federal agencies, tribes and the private sector) and seek to identify parallel needs and plans for geospatial data, standards, online distribution networks and services, coordination, funding, and policies.
The purpose of this web page is to provide a ready index for
information and materials related to the implementation of these action items.
